Frequently Asked Questions
What base is required?
A suitable base is crucial for a long-lasting resin bound surface. Typically, a concrete base is recommended. However, we do have a system we can use that is completely porous that replaces concrete altogether.
What thickness should it be installed at?
A standard driveway application is usually 5/8”, but this can vary depending on the expected traffic.
Can it be installed on existing surfaces?
Yes, resin bound can be installed on existing hard surfaces or concrete, provided they are in good condition. We can install over asphalt, but the asphalt has to be in very good condition. We also caution customers on installing over asphalt as it deteriorates faster than concrete.
Permeability & SUDS:
Are resin bound driveways permeable?
Yes, they are designed to be porous, allowing water to drain through easily.
Will it prevent puddles and pooling water?
Yes, the porous nature of the surface prevents water from pooling and creates a more puddle-free environment.
Durability & Maintenance:
How long do they last?
Resin bound surfaces are known for their durability and can last for 15-25 years or even longer as long as they’re maintained properly.
Are they slippery?
The porous nature of the surface means they are generally not slippery, even when wet, but we can add a non-skid product for extra grip for no extra cost.
How do I maintain them?
Occasional sweeping and power washing are usually sufficient for cleaning. We also recommend resealing every 3 years. However, some customers reseal every 2 years and some every year.
Will weeds grow through them?
Weed growth is significantly reduced due to the porous nature of the surface, which starves weed seedlings of water, but seeds can fall into the pores and germinate. If so, spray the area with a weed killer or pull the weeds out.
Other Considerations:
What colors are available?
A wide range of colors and aggregates are available, and custom blends can be created.
Can I drive on it?
Yes, resin bound surfaces are strong and durable enough to withstand vehicle traffic, including heavy vehicles.
Is it susceptible to rust spots?
Rust spots can occur if the aggregate contains iron, but this can be avoided by selecting appropriate aggregate materials and can be chipped out and repaired.
How much is it?
While we get asked this question a lot there is no one-size-fits-all answer. Most of our aggregate colors typically start at $8 per square foot(after discounts) for most flat work. However, some aggregate colors are more expensive because they are imported in from other countries. Also, there is an additional charge for borders, vertical work, crack treatment, mastic install in expansion joints.
